Growing up in Portland, Oregon, David spent much of his youth exploring Mount Hood and its foot hills in all the various seasons. Boredom with spending so much time at his parents’ cabin in the national forest turned into a patient observation of nature. He also discovered the sublime experience of alpine landscapes and began scaling peaks in the Cascades, Olympics, Wallowas and Trinity Alps hoping for further inspiration. Having spent so much time interacting with the wild, David now considers carefully how the built environment connects to the natural world. He also knows that space that has a “natural” effect can help ground people.

Having worked with both public and private “living” spaces where people relax, eat, share stories, express affection or simply sleep, David understands the need for emotional connection. Places that fulfill an operational purpose but don’t stir memories to the surface can leave people feeling numb and adrift. Engaging environments reminding us of other special places make us want to linger and create new memories with those around us.

David thinks beyond structure (the minimal idea of architecture as the building itself) in designing spaces. He looks to the adjacent environment, the plants, the outdoor rooms, the relationships to other built places. He considers the objects that will fill the space, furniture, fabrics, lighting and artwork. All these affect people’s engagement with spaces and how they will use the space. Each has its own lifespan to consider, landscape plants may take five to ten years (or longer) to reach their intended maturity, the color of some furnishings will fade with time, new technologies will make some fixtures obsolete. All this is considered while putting the whole experience of the space first.
